Aditya Hridaya Stotram (आदित्यहृदय स्तोत्रम्)
The Aditya Hridaya Stotram (आदित्यहृदय स्तोत्रम्) is a supreme Vedic hymn found in the Yuddha Kanda (Sarga 105) of Sage Valmiki's Ramayana. On the battlefield of Lanka, as Lord Rama paused after long hours of combat against the formidable Ravana, the revered Sage Agastya appeared alongside celestial seers and initiated Rama into this eternal secret of the Sun God (Surya Narayana). Reciting this stotra guarantees victory in righteous endeavors, radiates self-confidence, dispels debilitating depression and sluggishness, and bestows vibrant physical longevity.

ध्येयः सदा सवितृमण्डलमध्यवर्ती नारायणः सरसिजासनसन्निविष्टः । केयूरवान् मकरकुण्डलवान् किरीटी हारी हिरण्मयवपुर्धृतशङ्खचक्रः ॥
Dhyeyaḥ sadā savitṛ-maṇḍala-madhya-vartī Nārāyaṇaḥ sarasijāsana-sanniviṣṭaḥ | Keyūravān makara-kuṇḍalavān kirīṭī Hārī hiraṇmaya-vapur-dhṛta-śaṅkha-cakraḥ ||
One should always meditate upon Lord Narayana dwelling at the very center of the solar orb, seated upon a pristine lotus, adorned with divine armlets, alligator-shaped earrings, a radiant crown, and jewel necklaces, His golden effulgent form bearing the conch and the cosmic discus.
ततो युद्धपरिश्रान्तं समरे चिन्तया स्थितम् । रावणं चाग्रतो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम् ॥ १ ॥
Tato yuddha-pariśrāntaṁ samare cintayā sthitam | Rāvaṇaṁ cāgrato dṛṣṭvā yuddhāya samupasthitam || 1 ||

दैवतैश्च समागम्य द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो रणम् । उपागम्याब्रवीद्राममगस्त्यो भगवान् ऋषिः ॥ २ ॥
Daivataiśca samāgamya draṣṭum-abhyāgato raṇam | Upāgamyābravīd-rāmam-agastyo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ || 2 ||

राम राम महाबाहो शृणु गुह्यं सनातनम् । येन सर्वानरीन् वत्स समरे विजयिष्यसि ॥ ३ ॥
Rāma rāma mahā-bāho śṛṇu guhyaṁ sanātanam | Yena sarvān-arīn vatsa samare vijayiṣyasi || 3 ||
O mighty-armed Rama! O beloved son, listen to this eternal, secret wisdom by which you shall triumph over all adversaries on the battlefield!
आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम् । जयावहं जपेन्नित्यमक्षयं परमं शिवम् ॥ ४ ॥
Āditya-hṛdayaṁ puṇyaṁ sarva-śatru-vināśanam | Jayāvahaṁ japen-nityam-akṣayaṁ paramaṁ śivam || 4 ||
This holy hymn known as 'Aditya Hridaya' destroys all enemies, bestows unending victory, and is imperishable and supreme in its auspiciousness. It should be chanted daily with unwavering dedication.
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् । चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनमायुर्वर्धनमुत्तमम् ॥ ५ ॥
Sarva-maṅgala-māṅgalyaṁ sarva-pāpa-praṇāśanam | Cintā-śoka-praśamanam-āyur-vardhanam-uttamam || 5 ||
It is the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious, the complete dispeller of all sins, the sovereign pacifier of anxieties and grief, and the supreme enhancer of longevity.
रश्मिमन्तं समुद्यन्तं देवासुरनमस्कृतम् । पूजयस्व विवस्वन्तं भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥ ६ ॥
Raśmimantaṁ samudyantaṁ devāsura-namaskṛtam | Pūjayasva vivasvantaṁ bhāskaraṁ bhuvaneśvaram || 6 ||
Worship Lord Vivasvan, the radiant Sun God who is crowned with dazzling rays, rising gracefully into the skies, reverently saluted by both gods and demons, the illuminator and supreme sovereign of all cosmic worlds.
एष ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च शिवः स्कन्दः प्रजापतिः । महेन्द्रो धनदः कालो यमः सोमो ह्यपां पतिः ॥ ७ ॥
Eṣa brahmā ca viṣṇuś-ca śivaḥ skandaḥ prajāpatiḥ | Mahendro dhanadaḥ kālo yamaḥ somo hy-apāṁ patiḥ || 7 ||
This Sun is indeed Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Prajapati, Mahendra, Kubera, Kala (Time), Yama, Soma (Moon), and Varuna, the lord of waters.
पितरो वसवः साध्या ह्यश्विनौ मरुतो मनुः । वायुर्वह्निः प्रजाप्राण ऋतुकर्ता प्रभाकरः ॥ ८ ॥
Pitaro vasavaḥ sādhyā hy-aśvinau maruto manuḥ | Vāyur-vahniḥ prajā-prāṇa ṛtu-kartā prabhākaraḥ || 8 ||
He is the Pitris (ancestors), the eight Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Ashvini twins, the Maruts, Manu, Vayu (wind), Agni (fire), the vital breath of all creatures, creator of the seasons, and source of all illumination.
आदित्यः सविता सूर्यः खगः पूषा गभस्तिमान् । सुवर्णसदृशो भानुर्हिरण्यरेता दिवाकरः ॥ ९ ॥
Ādityaḥ savitā sūryaḥ khagaḥ pūṣā gabhastimān | Suvarṇa-sadṛśo bhānur-hiraṇya-retā divākaraḥ || 9 ||
He is Aditya, Savita (inspirer), Surya, Khaga (sky-traveler), Pusha (nourisher), Gabhastiman (radiant with beams), golden-glowing Bhanu, Hiranyareta, and Divakara (creator of the day).
हरिदश्वः सहस्रार्चिः सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान् । तिमिरोन्मथनः शम्भुस्त्वष्टा मार्ताण्ड अंशुमान् ॥ १० ॥
Haridaśvaḥ sahasrārciḥ sapta-saptir-marīcimān | Timironmathanaḥ śambhus-tvaṣṭā mārtāṇḍa aṁśumān || 10 ||
Yoked with greenish-gold steeds, possessing a thousand rays, drawn by seven horses, brilliant with beams, disperser of darkness, Shambhu the auspicious, Twashta the divine architect, born of the cosmic egg (Martanda), and richly rayed.
हिरण्यगर्भः शिशिरस्तपनो भास्करो रविः । अग्निगर्भोऽदितेः पुत्रः शङ्खः शिशिरनाशनः ॥ ११ ॥
Hiraṇyagarbhaḥ śiśiras-tapano bhāskaro raviḥ | Agni-garbho'diteḥ putraḥ śaṅkhaḥ śiśira-nāśanaḥ || 11 ||
Hiranyagarbha (cosmic womb), coolant and scorcher, illuminator Bhaskara, extolled Ravi, fire-wombed son of Aditi, ocean of peace and dispeller of frost and dullness.
व्योमनाथस्तमोभेदी ऋग्यजुःसामपारगः । घनवृष्टिरपां मित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवङ्गमः ॥ १२ ॥
Vyomanāthas-tamobhedī ṛg-yajuḥ-sāma-pāragaḥ | Ghana-vṛṣṭir-apāṁ mitro vindhya-vīthī-plavaṅgamaḥ || 12 ||
Lord of the heavens, piercer of gloom, master of the Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas, sender of heavy rains, friend of waters, swiftly gliding across the celestial course over Mount Vindhya.
आतपी मण्डली मृत्युः पिङ्गलः सर्वतापनः । कविर्विश्वो महातेजा रक्तः सर्वभवोद्भवः ॥ १३ ॥
Ātapī maṇḍalī mṛtyuḥ piṅgalaḥ sarva-tāpanaḥ | Kavir-viśvo mahā-tejā raktaḥ sarva-bhavodbhavaḥ || 13 ||
Radiating intense heat, orb-shaped, death-dealer to evils, tawny-hued, scorcher of all, omniscient poet, universal form, fiercely brilliant, crimson-red, and origin of all existence.
नक्षत्रग्रहताराणामधिपो विश्वभावनः । तेजसामपि तेजस्वी द्वादशात्मन् नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ १४ ॥
Nakṣatra-graha-tārāṇām-adhipo viśva-bhāvanaḥ | Tejasām-api tejasvī dvādaśātman namo'stu te || 14 ||
Sovereign Lord of constellations, planets, and stars, protector of the universe, the most radiant among all luminous energies, manifest in twelve forms—salutations unto You!
नमः पूर्वाय गिरये पश्चिमायाद्रये नमः । ज्योतिर्गणानां पतये दिनाधिपतये नमः ॥ १५ ॥
Namaḥ pūrvāya giraye paścimāyādraye namaḥ | Jyotir-gaṇānāṁ pataye dinādhipataye namaḥ || 15 ||
Salutations to the Lord of the eastern dawn mountain! Salutations to the Lord of the western twilight hill! Salutations to the Master of all celestial luminaries, the Sovereign of the Day!
जयाय जयभद्राय हर्यश्वाय नमो नमः । नमो नमः सहस्रांशो आदित्याय नमो नमः ॥ १६ ॥
Jayāya jaya-bhadrāya haryaśvāya namo namaḥ | Namo namaḥ sahasrāṁśo ādityāya namo namaḥ || 16 ||
Salutations again and again to the Victorious, the bestower of blessed victory, bearer of green-gold horses! Salutations to the Thousand-Rayed Aditya, repeated salutations!
नम उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः । नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय मार्ताण्डाय नमो नमः ॥ १७ ॥
Nama ugrāya vīrāya sāraṅgāya namo namaḥ | Namaḥ padma-prabodhāya mārtāṇḍāya namo namaḥ || 17 ||
Salutations to the fierce and formidable warrior, swift traveler! Salutations to the awakener of the lotus, to Martanda, repeated salutations!
ब्रह्मेशानाच्युतेशाय सूर्यायादित्यवर्चसे । भास्वते सर्वभक्षाय रौद्राय वपुषे नमः ॥ १८ ॥
Brahmeśānācyuteśāya sūryāyāditya-varcase | Bhāsvate sarva-bhakṣāya raudrāya vapuṣe namaḥ || 18 ||
Salutations to the Lord of Brahma, Shiva, and Achyuta, radiant as the primal Aditya, all-consuming at dissolution, bearing a formidable cosmic form!
तमोघ्नाय हिमघ्नाय शत्रुघ्नायामितात्मने । कृतघ्नघ्नाय देवाय ज्योतिषां पतये नमः ॥ १९ ॥
Tamoghnāya himaghnāya śatrughnāyāmitātmane | Kṛtaghnaghnāya devāya jyotiṣāṁ pataye namaḥ || 19 ||
Dispeller of darkness, destroyer of frost, vanquisher of foes, boundless in soul, destroyer of the ungrateful, divine Sovereign of all luminaries, salutations!
तप्तचामीकराभाय वह्नये विश्वकर्मणे । नमस्तमोऽभिनिघ्नाय रुचये लोकसाक्षिणे ॥ २० ॥
Tapta-cāmīkarābhāya vahnaye viśva-karmaṇe | Namas-tamo'bhinighnāya rucaye loka-sākṣiṇe || 20 ||
Gleaming like molten gold, essence of fire, architect of the universe, obliterator of darkness, radiant splendor, and eternal Witness of all deeds in the world, salutations!
नाशयत्येष वै भूतं तदेव सृजति प्रभुः । पायत्येष तपत्येष वर्षत्येष गभस्तिभिः ॥ २१ ॥
Nāśayaty-eṣa vai bhūtaṁ tad-eva sṛjati prabhuḥ | Pāyaty-eṣa tapaty-eṣa varṣaty-eṣa gabhastibhiḥ || 21 ||
This Lord dissolves all beings and He alone creates them anew. With His rays, He absorbs water, radiates heat, and pours forth reviving showers upon the earth.
एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति भूतेषु परिनिष्ठितः । एष एवाग्निहोत्रं च फलं चैवाग्निहोत्रिणाम् ॥ २२ ॥
Eṣa supteṣu jāgarti bhūteṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ | Eṣa evāgni-hotraṁ ca phalaṁ caivāgni-hotriṇām || 22 ||
He remains awake within all creatures when they sleep. He is the sacred Agnihotra sacrifice, and He alone is the fruit attained by the performers of sacrifices.
वेदाश्च क्रतवश्चैव क्रतूनां फलमेव च । यानि कृत्यानि लोकेषु सर्व एष रविः प्रभुः ॥ २३ ॥
Vedāś-ca kratavaś-caiva kratūnāṁ phalam-eva ca | Yāni kṛtyāni lokeṣu sarva eṣa raviḥ prabhuḥ || 23 ||
The Vedas, the sacrifices, the fruits of sacrifices, and whatever noble duties exist across the worlds—all these are Lord Ravi, the Sovereign Supreme.
एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तारेषु भयेषु च । कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव ॥ २४ ॥
Enam-āpatsu kṛcchreṣu kāntāreṣu bhayeṣu ca | Kīrtayan puruṣaḥ kaścin-nāvasīdati rāghava || 24 ||
Sage Agastya said: 'O Raghava! Whoever glorifies this Sun God in times of dire calamity, suffering, thick wilderness, or grave danger, never sinks under despair!'
पूजयस्वैनमेकाग्रो देवदेवं जगत्पतिम् । एतत् त्रिगुणितं जप्त्वा युद्धेषु विजentryष्यसि ॥ २५ ॥
Pūjayasvainam-ekāgro deva-devaṁ jagat-patim | Etat triguṇitaṁ japtvā yuddheṣu vijayiṣyasi || 25 ||
Therefore, O Rama, worship this God of gods and Lord of the Universe with one-pointed focus. Reciting this hymn thrice, you will surely emerge victorious in battle!
अस्मिन् क्षणे महाबाहो रावणं त्वं वधिष्यसि । एवमुक्त्वा ततोऽगस्त्यो जगाम च यथागतम् ॥ २६ ॥
Asmin kṣaṇe mahābāho rāvaṇaṁ tvaṁ vadhiṣyasi | Evam-uktvā tato'gastyo jagāma ca yathāgatam || 26 ||
'O mighty-armed warrior! In this very hour, you shall slay Ravana!' Having said this, Sage Agastya departed as he had come.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजा नष्टशोकोऽभवत्तदा । धारयामास सुप्रीतो राघवः प्रयतात्मवान् ॥ २७ ॥
Etac-chrutvā mahā-tejā naṣṭa-śoko'bhavat-tadā | Dhārayāmāsa suprīto rāghavaḥ prayatātmavān || 27 ||
Hearing this, the glorious Rama became freed from all sorrow. With immense delight and a purified soul, He accepted the divine hymn with unwavering reverence.
आदित्यं प्रेक्ष्य जप्त्वा तु परं हर्षमवाप्तवान् । त्रिराचम्य शुचिर्भूत्वा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान् ॥ २८ ॥
Ādityaṁ prekṣya japtvā tu paraṁ harṣam-avāptavān | Trir-ācamya śucir-bhūtvā dhanur-ādāya vīryavān || 28 ||
Gazing upon the Sun and chanting the hymn, Rama experienced supreme joy. Sipping water thrice to purify Himself, the valorous hero raised His mighty bow.
रावणं प्रेक्ष्य हृष्टात्मा युद्धाय समुपागमत् । सर्वयत्नेन महता वधे तस्य धृतोऽभवत् ॥ २९ ॥
Rāvaṇaṁ prekṣya hṛṣṭātmā yuddhāya samupāgamat | Sarva-yatnena mahatā vadhe tasya dhṛto'bhavat || 29 ||
Beholding Ravana ahead, with an invigorated heart, Rama advanced to battle, firmly resolved with supreme effort to slay the demon king.
अथ रुचिरविलोचनो मुदा युक्तः परमरहस्यमुपेत्य राघवस्तु । प्रमुदितमनाः स रावणं दृष्ट्वा समुपस्थितं पुनरुद्यतो बभूव ॥ ३० ॥
Atha rucira-vilocano mudā yuktaḥ Parama-rahasyam-upetya rāghavas-tu | Pramudita-manāḥ sa rāvaṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā Samupasthitaṁ punar-udyato babhūva || 30 ||
Thus, having received this supreme esoteric wisdom, lovely-eyed Raghava was filled with celestial joy. With an uplifted soul, beholding Ravana before Him, He readied Himself for the final assault.
अथ रविरवदन्निरीक्ष्य रामं मुदितमनाः परमं प्रहृष्यमाणः । निशिचरपतिकसंक्षयं विदित्वा सुरगणमध्यगतो वचस्त्वरेति ॥ ३१ ॥
Atha ravir-avadann-irīkṣya rāmaṁ Mudita-manāḥ paramaṁ prahṛṣyamāṇaḥ | Niśicara-patika-saṁkṣayaṁ viditvā Sura-gaṇa-madhya-gato vacas-tvareti || 31 ||
Then Lord Surya, standing amidst the assembly of celestial devas, gazed upon Rama with immense delight; and knowing that the destruction of the demon king was at hand, called out: 'O Rama, hasten!'

Having heard this supreme mystery from Sage Agastya, Lord Rama washed His face with water, sipped it thrice, and looking at the Sun God, recited this hymn three times with concentrated devotion. His fatigue vanished immediately, His bow sprang with unmatched vigor, and He marched forward to claim decisive victory.
