The Mischievous Makhan Chor & The Cosmic Vision
As Krishna grew into a toddler, His enchanting pastimes filled Gokul with immense joy. His most celebrated Leela was His relentless pursuit of freshly churned butter (Makhan). Though Nanda Maharaja owned hundreds of thousands of cows and their house overflowed with dairy, Krishna preferred to steal butter from the homes of the neighboring Gopis.
He would organize a gang of young cowherd boys and monkeys. While the Gopis were busy with household chores, Krishna and His friends would sneak in. If the butter pots were hung high from the ceiling to keep them out of reach, clever Kanha would build a human pyramid, climbing onto the shoulders of His friends to break the pots. The Gopis would march to Mother Yashoda daily with complaints: 'Your son breaks our pots, feeds our butter to the monkeys, and pinches our babies if we don't give Him sweets!' Yet, secretly, the Gopis were deeply in love with Krishna and purposely churned extra butter, leaving it accessible just to catch a glimpse of His beautiful face.
One day, a magnificent event occurred during a seemingly ordinary dispute. Krishna's elder brother, Balarama, and His friends came running to Mother Yashoda, complaining that Krishna had eaten mud while playing. Angered, Yashoda grabbed a small stick and demanded, 'Kanha! Did you eat dirt? Open your mouth right now and show me!'
Faking innocence and fear, trembling slightly, little Krishna opened His tiny mouth. As Yashoda peered inside, she didn't see mud. Instead, she gasped in pure astonishment. Inside the mouth of her child, she saw the entire expanding universe—the glowing sun, the moon, millions of stars, galaxies, oceans, mountains, and continents. She even saw the village of Vrindavan, and amazingly, she saw herself looking into Krishna's mouth. Overwhelmed by the realization that her son was the Supreme Creator of all existence, she nearly fainted. Instantly, Krishna cast His veil of Yogamaya over her mind. Yashoda blinked, shook her head, forgot the cosmic vision entirely, and hugged her child tightly, consumed once again by pure, unconditional maternal love.
