Karthigai Deepam, often described as the South Indian 'Festival of Endless Lights', is celebrated during the Tamil month of Karthigai when the full moon coincides with the auspicious Krittika Nakshatra (Pleiades). Deeply rooted in Shaiva and Murugan traditions across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the festival honors Lord Shiva manifesting as the infinite cosmic pillar of fire (Annamalaiyar / Arunachala). The crowning event takes place atop the sacred 2,668-foot Arunachala hill in Tiruvannamalai, where a gigantic cauldron filled with tons of pure ghee and camphor is lit as the 'Maha Deepam', visible for miles around.

Celebrated when Krittika Nakshatra is active on the full moon day of Tamil Karthigai month.
Before the dawn of recorded time, in the boundless, celestial realms where the cosmos was still being woven into existence, a profound disturbance shook the heavens. The universe, which thrived on perfect harmony, was suddenly threatened by a cosmic dispute between two of the supreme deities: Lord Brahma, the Creator of the Universe, and Lord Vishnu, the Preserver.
Even the greatest of divine beings are sometimes used by the cosmos to teach humanity the ultimate lessons of ego and humility. Both gods, magnificent in their power and responsibilities, became entangled in a heated argument over who was the superior force. Their debate over supremacy caused the very foundations of the universe to tremble, as the ego threatened to disrupt the sacred balance of creation and preservation.
Witnessing this clash of cosmic pride, Lord Shiva (Mahadeva), the Destroyer of Illusions and the embodiment of absolute consciousness, decided to intervene. He did not appear bearing weapons, nor did He speak words of condemnation. Instead, to shatter the illusion of their egos, He manifested between them in a form that defied all comprehension.
Suddenly, the celestial argument was silenced by a blinding, deafening roar. The fabric of space tore open, and a blazing, immeasurable column of cosmic fire erupted between Brahma and Vishnu. This was the Lingodbhava—the infinite, beginningless, and endless pillar of pure light (Jyotirlinga). It radiated with the intensity of a million suns, stretching infinitely upward into the heavens and plunging infinitely downward into the cosmic abyss.
"True supremacy is not defined by creation or preservation, but by the infinite, boundless consciousness that holds both. To know the ultimate, one must surrender the ego."
Stunned by this overwhelming manifestation, Brahma and Vishnu agreed to a challenge: whoever could find the end of this blazing pillar would be declared the supreme deity. Driven by their remaining pride, they assumed magnificent avatars to conquer the infinite.
Lord Brahma transformed Himself into a magnificent, swift Hamsa (swan) and took flight, soaring upwards with all his might to find the crown of the fiery column. Lord Vishnu, choosing the path of grounding and depth, took the form of a mighty Varaha (boar). With immense strength, he began to dig furiously into the netherworlds to uncover the base of the pillar.
Eons passed. Brahma flew higher than the highest heavens, yet the fiery pillar stretched infinitely beyond his reach. Vishnu dug deeper than the darkest depths of the cosmic ocean, tearing through the layers of the earth, but the base remained ever-elusive. The infinite cannot be measured by the finite mind, no matter how powerful.
Exhausted and humbled, Lord Vishnu was the first to realize the profound truth. He understood that this fire was Parabrahman—the ultimate, formless reality. Abandoning his ego, Vishnu returned to the starting point and gracefully bowed before the infinite light, admitting that the supreme consciousness was beyond his measure.
Brahma, too, returned. Though ancient scriptures note that he initially tried to claim he had seen the top, he ultimately realized the futility of his pride. Both deities surrendered completely, joining their hands in deep reverence. In their moment of utter humility, the blazing heat of the pillar subsided, and Lord Shiva revealed Himself from within the column, blessing them with the wisdom that all three—Creation, Preservation, and Dissolution—are merely different expressions of the One Supreme Truth.
Because a blazing pillar of cosmic radiation was too intense for the earth and its future inhabitants to bear, Lord Shiva performed an act of supreme compassion. He cooled His terrifying, fiery form into a tranquil, solid manifestation.
The cosmic fire crystallized into the sacred, silent mountain of Arunachala, located in modern-day Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. To this day, Arunachala is not merely considered a mountain, but the very embodiment of Lord Shiva Himself—a frozen fire of spiritual awakening.
The story of Arunachala teaches modern seekers profound spiritual truths:

The earthen lamp (Agal Vilakku) represents the human body, the wick signifies the intellect, the oil represents devotion, and the flame symbolizes the dawn of spiritual illumination eliminating ego.
Lord Murugan emerged as six sparks of divine fire from Lord Shiva's third eye, nurtured by the six Krittika maidens at the Saravana tank before Goddess Parvati merged them into one divine child (Shanmukha).
Devotees light multiples of lamps, often 27 (symbolizing the 27 lunar Nakshatras) placed at every threshold, windowsill, and pathway.
