Hanuman Jayanti marks the appearance day of Lord Hanuman, the eleventh Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva and the supreme paragon of selfless devotion (Bhakti), celibacy (Brahmacharya), immense strength, and humility. Celebrated on the Chaitra Purnima (full moon) day in North India and on Margashirsha/Vaishakha in Southern states, this sacred day invokes the blessings of Sankatmochan Hanuman to destroy planetary afflictions (especially Shani Sade Sati), ward off evil energies, and develop mental fortitude.

Celebrated on Chaitra Purnima at sunrise in North India.
Among the most electrifying and spiritually charged celebrations in Sanatana Dharma, Hanuman Jayanti commemorates the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman—the supreme embodiment of unshakeable devotion (Bhakti), colossal physical strength (Shakti), intellectual brilliance (Buddhi), and selfless service (Seva). Revered as the 11th Rudra manifestation of Lord Shiva, the son of Mata Anjana and King Kesari (and spiritually fathered by Vayu Deva, the Wind God), Lord Hanuman is hailed as an immortal Chiranjivi who physically walks the earth in the age of Kali Yuga to protect righteousness and vanquish fear.
In most parts of India, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated with profound reverence on the full moon day (Purnima Tithi) of the Hindu month of Chaitra (March–April), coinciding with the culmination of the Chaitra Navratri period. In southern traditions like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, it is observed during the lunar months of Margazhi or Vaishakha. The heartbeat of this holy day is the sacred ritual of Sindoor Arpan (coating the deity with orange vermilion in jasmine oil) and the unbroken recitation of sacred mantras that demolish all planetary afflictions, evil influences, and mental anxiety.
"Manojavam Maaruta-tulya-vegam, Jitendriyam Buddhimataam Varishttham.
Vaataatmajam Vaanara-yootha-mukhyam, Shree Raama-dootam Sharanam Prapadye."
(I take refuge in Lord Hanuman, the supreme messenger of Sri Rama, who is as swift as the mind, as fast as the wind, the master of his senses, the foremost among the wise, the divine son of the Wind God, and the supreme leader of the Vanara army.)

Unlike distant celestial deities, Lord Hanuman is considered an Avyakta presence who is instantly accessible. The Ramayana records that when Lord Rama concluded His earthly incarnation and prepared to return to Vaikuntha, Hanuman chose to remain on earth as long as the holy name of Rama is chanted across creation.
The title Sankat Mochan literally translates to "the annihilator of distress." Lord Hanuman possesses the rare cosmic blessing that no planet, demon, disease, or weapon can harm Him:
The most visually striking feature of Hanuman temples worldwide is the deity’s dazzling orange or saffron appearance. This custom of coating Hanuman with vermilion—known as Chola Chadhana or Sindoor Arpan—originates from an intensely touching episode in the Ramayana:
One morning in the palace of Ayodhya, Hanuman saw Mother Sita applying a line of bright orange vermilion (Sindoor) into the parting of Her hair. Curious, the innocent monkey-god asked: "O Divine Mother, why do you apply this red powder upon your head?"
Mother Sita smiled tenderly and replied: "My beloved child, applying this sindoor ensures the long life, supreme health, safety, and happiness of your Lord Sri Rama. It pleases Him beyond measure."
Hanuman paused and contemplated deeply. He reasoned: "If a tiny pinch of sindoor applied to Mother Sita’s hairline can grant my Lord Rama long life and joy, what would happen if I cover my entire body with it? My Lord will become immortal, invincible, and eternally pleased!"
Without a moment's hesitation, Hanuman rushed to the market, procured a massive heap of orange vermilion, mixed it with fragrant oil, and smeared every inch of his body—from his toes to the tip of his ears and tail—in brilliant orange sindoor. When he walked into the royal court glowing like a blazing sun, the courtiers were shocked, but Lord Rama understood the fathomless purity of his devotion. Deeply moved, Sri Rama pulled Hanuman into an affectionate embrace and declared:
"Whosoever offers orange sindoor mixed with fragrant oil to Hanuman, especially on Tuesdays, Saturdays, or Hanuman Jayanti, shall instantly be freed from all worldly tribulations, planetary curses, and grief. Their wishes shall be granted without delay."
Offering a Chola to Lord Hanuman is a high-potency Tantric and Vedic ritual that should be performed with pristine bodily cleanliness and intense focus:
Chanting these sacred verses on Hanuman Jayanti invokes immediate courage, mental fortitude, and divine protection:
"ॐ हं हनुमते नमः॥"
(Om Hum Hanumate Namah)
Purpose: Cleanses the surrounding aura, removes chronic fear, and creates an impenetrable energetic shield.
"असाध्य-साधक स्वामिन् असाध्यं तव किं वद।
राम-दूत कृपा-सिन्धो मत्-कार्यं साधय प्रभो॥"
Transliteration: "Asadhya-sadhaka swamin asadhyam tava kim vada. Rama-doota kripa-sindho mat-karyam sadhaya prabho."
Meaning: "O master who effortlessly accomplishes the impossible, tell me, is there anything in this universe that is impossible for You? O messenger of Sri Rama, ocean of mercy, bless and successfully accomplish my difficult endeavor!"
"मर्कटेश महोत्साह सर्वशोक-विनाशक।
शत्रून् संहर मां रक्ष श्रियं दापय मे प्रभो॥"
Purpose: Neutralizes the malefic effects of Shani Sade Sati, removes legal entanglements, and dispels poverty.
Composed by Goswami Tulsidas in Awadhi, reciting the 40 verses of the Hanuman Chalisa 7, 11, or 100 times on Hanuman Jayanti is regarded as the ultimate panacea for physical ailments, depression, nightmares, and spiritual stagnation.

In North India, it is celebrated on Chaitra Purnima (marking His physical birth). In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it is celebrated for 41 days starting from Chaitra Purnima and concluding on Vaishakha Bahula Dasami. In Tamil Nadu, it is observed as Hanumath Jayanthi during the month of Margazhi (December–January) under the Moola Nakshatra. In Maharashtra and Karnataka, some communities celebrate it on the eve of Diwali (Narak Chaturdashi).
Mustard oil is fiery and pungent, historically associated with martial warfare and exorcisms. The sacred Chola, however, is an act of loving cooling worship; hence, cooling Chameli (Jasmine) oil or pure cow ghee is strictly prescribed to soothe the deity.
Yes, absolutely. Lord Hanuman views all women through the divine lens of Mother Sita. Women can freely chant the Hanuman Chalisa, Sundarkand, and offer fruits, sweets, and flowers at His feet. The only traditional restriction is avoiding physical touch of the consecrated idol, out of deep respect for His vow of Bal Brahmacharya.
In the Ramayana, when Hanuman returned from Lanka bringing the joyous news that Mother Sita was alive and safe, Sita was so overwhelmed with gratitude that She plucked a betel leaf from a nearby creeper and placed it upon his forehead as an emerald crown of victory. Offering a sweet betel leaf honors this historical triumph.
Lord Hanuman is not an abstract mythological symbol; He is a vibrant, living cosmic force that answers the sincere cry of any soul engulfed in darkness. By meditating upon His peerless courage, offering the sacred orange sindoor, and vibrating the cosmos with His holy mantras on Hanuman Jayanti, devotees shed all helplessness and awaken the dormant reservoir of strength, devotion, and supreme fearlessness within themselves.
"Bajarangabali Ki Jai! May the unconquerable strength, supreme wisdom, and boundless grace of Sri Hanuman protect your life, eradicate all sorrows, and lead you toward eternal victory."
