2. Scriptural Origin: Why Shiva Manifested as Kaal Bhairav

The legend of Kaal Bhairav is elaborated in the Shiva Purana and the Avanti Khanda of the Skanda Purana. A dispute once arose between Brahma and Vishnu regarding supreme cosmic supremacy. When Brahma's fifth head spoke haughtily and insulted Shiva, an incandescent pillar of light erupted, from which emerged the terrifying form of Kaal Bhairav, holding a blazing trident.

With a swift flick of his left fingernail, Bhairav severed Brahma's arrogant fifth head (Brahma-Kapala). However, because Brahma was a Vedic creator, the head adhered to Bhairav's hand as the sin of Brahmahatya. Shiva instructed Bhairav to observe the Kapalika vow, wandering across the cosmos until the skull fell naturally. Bhairav traversed all three worlds, but the skull remained affixed. Only upon stepping into the sanctified soil of Avanti (Ujjain) along the Shipra River did the skull instantly fall off, washing away the karmic imprint. Immensely pleased, Lord Shiva declared that Kaal Bhairav would permanently reside here as the eternal protector of the city.

Understanding the role of Kaal Bhairav requires seeing him as the cosmic filter of Ujjain. His primary responsibilities include:

* **Boundary Protection (Kshetrapala):** He shields the sacred grid of Ujjain from malefic astral forces, negative energies, and malevolent entities. No negative entity can pierce the energetic perimeter guarded by Bhairav.

During the ritual, the temple priest pours liquor into a silver or brass plate and places it against the lips of the murti.
