Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Why Lord Ganesha is Worshipped First

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Why Lord Ganesha is Worshipped First | Bhakti Voice

The Race Around the Universe

The most famous mythological story explaining this timeless tradition involves a divine competition on Mount Kailash. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati decided to test their two illustrious sons, the elephant-headed Ganesha and the warrior-god Kartikeya. The challenge was simple yet monumental: whoever could circumambulate the entire universe and return to them first would be declared the winner and given the fruit of supreme knowledge.

Kartikeya, eager to prove his physical prowess, immediately hopped onto his incredibly swift peacock and zoomed off into the cosmos, visiting every sacred river and galaxy. Ganesha, with his heavy, pot-bellied body and a tiny mouse (Mooshak) as his vehicle, knew he couldn't possibly win by sheer physical speed. But Ganesha is the lord of intellect (Buddhi). Using his profound wisdom—the very trait he governs—he simply walked a circle around his parents, Shiva and Parvati, with folded hands.

When questioned by his astounded parents, Ganesha humbly yet brilliantly replied, 'My entire universe resides within you, my parents. By walking around you, I have circumambulated all the worlds.' Astounded by his unparalleled wisdom, deep devotion, and understanding of the ultimate Vedantic truth (that God is everywhere and specifically in one's parents), Lord Shiva embraced him. He granted Ganesha the boon of 'Pratham Pujya', decreeing that till the end of time, no puja, yagna, or new venture would bear successful fruit without invoking Ganesha first.

The Psychological Genius of Vighnaharta

Beyond the beautiful mythological story, there is a brilliant, undeniable psychological and spiritual architecture to worshipping Ganesha first. Ganesha is universally revered as 'Vighnaharta,' the destroyer of evils and the supreme remover of obstacles. When we human beings start anything new—a business, a marriage, an exam, or a journey—the human mind is naturally fraught with anxiety, self-doubt, and a paralyzing fear of failure. Our minds create 'Vighnas' (obstacles) through overthinking.

By taking a moment to fold our hands, chant 'Vakratunda Mahakaya', and pray to the 'Remover of Obstacles,' we are effectively commanding our subconscious mind to release its anxiety. It is a profound psychological anchor. Worshipping the stable, grounded, elephant-headed god calms our nervous system. It instills a deep-seated, spiritual confidence that the cosmic forces are aligning in our favor, and the path ahead is being cleared of hurdles by divine intervention. It masterfully transitions the human mind from a chaotic state of worry to a tranquil state of focused execution.

Profound Symbolism in Everyday Life

Every single aspect of Lord Ganesha’s unique physical form represents the vital tools needed to succeed in any new beginning. His uniquely large ears remind us, the devotees, to listen more than we speak, absorbing knowledge from our surroundings. His small, focused mouth tells us to talk less and work more efficiently. His large, majestic stomach represents the capacity to peacefully digest both the good and bad experiences in life without losing balance.

And what about the sharp axe in his hand? It is not a weapon of violence, but a spiritual tool meant to cut away the heavy bonds of materialistic attachment, ego, and procrastination that hold us back. This Ganesh Chaturthi, as you lovingly bring Bappa into your home or office, remember that you aren't just following a blind, ancient ritual. You are actively invoking an ancient spiritual technology designed to optimize your mind, body, and soul for absolute success, peace, and spiritual equilibrium.
