History

Believed by tradition to have been originally built over Krishna's residential palace (Hari Griha) by his great-grandson Vajranabha over 2,200 years ago. The current limestone structure dates largely to the 15th-16th century Chalukya/Māru-Gurjara additions, retaining ancient structural foundations sanctified by Adi Shankaracharya.

Built in magnificent Māru-Gurjara style from fine limestone, the structure features a 72-pillared hall (Nij Mandir) and a 78-meter high shikhara adorned with intricate sculptural bands depicting celestial beings and floral motifs.
