Unbeknownst to her, Charumati’s pure-hearted devotion had attracted the attention of the celestial realms.

A Slumber Blessed by the Divine

One tranquil night, as the city of Kundina slept under a canopy of silver starlight, Charumati drifted into a deep slumber. In the quiet sanctuary of her mind, the darkness suddenly gave way to an ethereal, golden light. The fragrance of divine lotuses filled the air, and stepping out of this radiant brilliance was none other than Goddess Lakshmi, the supreme deity of wealth, fortune, and prosperity.

However, the Goddess did not appear in Her usual majestic form. She appeared as Varalakshmi—the compassionate mother who grants boons (varam) to her devotees. Covered in resplendent jewels, draped in a crimson silk sari, and exuding a motherly warmth, the Goddess smiled at the humble homemaker.

"O noble Charumati," the Goddess spoke, Her voice like the chiming of sacred bells. "I am deeply moved by your unwavering virtue, your patience, and the selfless love with which you nurture your family. I have come to bestow upon you a sacred knowledge that will banish sorrow and bring eternal prosperity to your home and to the world."

The Revelation of the Vrata Vidhi

In that divine dream, Goddess Varalakshmi meticulously revealed the Varalakshmi Vrata vidhi (the sacred procedure of the fast and worship). She gave Charumati precise instructions that would forever change the spiritual landscape of Hindu traditions.

The Goddess instructed that this auspicious vow must be observed on a very specific day: the Friday (Shukravara) immediately preceding the Shravana Purnima (the full moon day of the holy month of Shravana). She explained that any woman who worships Her with a pure heart on this day would be blessed with Ashta Lakshmi—the eight earthly forces of wealth, including prosperity, fertility, courage, knowledge, and health.

The First Ritual and the Shower of Miracles

When the appointed Friday in the month of Shravana arrived, the women gathered at Charumati’s freshly cleaned and decorated home. The atmosphere was charged with devotion.

Following the Goddess's dream instructions, they prepared the sacred Kalash (a brass or silver pot filled with rice and water, adorned with mango leaves and a coconut). They invoked Goddess Varalakshmi into the Kalash, offering her fresh flowers, turmeric, kumkum, and special delicacies. They tied the sacred yellow thread with nine knots around their right wrists, symbolizing protection and divine grace, and sang hymns praising the Goddess of Fortune.

As the final camphor flame (Aarti) was offered, a miracle unfolded. The women opened their eyes to find their humble dwellings completely transformed. Because of their collective devotion, the Goddess had kept Her promise.
