Shri Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex in Mathura marks the exact sacred spot where Lord Krishna incarnated over 5,000 years ago in the prison cell of tyrant King Kamsa. Regarded as one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations on earth, the complex encompasses the subterranean Garbha Griha (actual birth cell), the grand Keshavdev Temple, the Bhagavata Bhavan, and the ancient Potra Kund stepwell where the infant Lord's garments were washed.
History
Excavations confirm sacred structures here dating back over 2,000 years to the Kushana and Gupta eras. The temple was rebuilt repeatedly following destructions by Mahmud of Ghazni, Sikandar Lodi, and Aurangzeb. The modern resurgence was spearheaded in the mid-20th century by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, Jaidayal Dalmia, and the Birla family.
Architecture
Spacious complex built with carved red sandstones from Bharatpur. The Bhagavata Bhavan contains extensive marble corridors with walls inscribed with all 700 verses of the Bhagavad Gita and ceiling frescoes depicting Krishna's cosmic pastimes.
