Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple, nestled in Thrissur district of Kerala, is reverently known as 'Bhuloka Vaikuntha' (the earthly abode of Vishnu). The central four-armed idol of Balagopala (child Krishna), carved from the rare sacred stone Patala Anjanam, holds the Conch, Discus, Mace, and Lotus. It is one of South India's most spiritually disciplined and celebrated pilgrimage destinations.
History
According to the Guru-Gita and Narada Purana, at the dawn of Kali Yuga when Dwarka was submerged by the ocean, Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu (Wind God) retrieved the sacred vigraha worshipped by Vasudeva and Devaki, installing it here on the advice of Lord Shiva. Hence, the place was sanctified as 'Guru-Vayur'.

Classic Kerala temple architecture (Vastu Vidya) characterized by sloping tiled roofs, copper-plated sanctum (Srikovil), the circular inner sanctum, granite lamp towers (Deepastambham), and intricate wooden carvings depicting Vaishnava legends.

September to March. Utsavam (annual 10-day festival in Kumbham month) and Guruvayur Ekadashi (Nov-Dec) feature magnificent elephant processions.

Nirmalya Darshan starts at 03:00 AM. The temple remains open until 01:30 PM, then reopens from 04:30 PM to 09:15 PM following night rituals and Athazha Pooja.
