Raksha Bandhan, observed on the Purnima (full moon) tithi of the holy Shravana month, celebrates the sacred bond of unconditional love, moral obligation, and lifelong protection between brothers and sisters. The sister ties a consecrated sacred thread (Rakhi or Raksha Sutra) on her brother's right wrist, applying vermilion (Tilak) and offering sweets, while praying for his health, prosperity, and longevity. In return, the brother pledges to protect her honor and wellbeing under all circumstances.

Frequently asked questions
Why should Rakhi never be tied during Bhadra Kaal?
Bhadra is considered the aggressive daughter of Lord Surya. Ancient scriptures state that tying Rakhi in Bhadra brings distress to the king and destruction of strength, as illustrated in the downfall of Ravana.
What is the Vedic Raksha Mantra chanted while tying Rakhi?
'Yenabaddho Balee Raajaa Daanavendro Mahaabalah | Tena Tvaam Anubadhnaami Rakshe Maa Chala Maa Chala ||' (I tie on you the same protection thread that bound the mighty King Bali; may this Raksha never waver).
