Shrinathji Temple in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, is the supreme pilgrimage center of the Pushtimarg tradition founded by Jagadguru Vallabhacharya. Portraying Lord Krishna as a seven-year-old child lifting Mount Govardhan with his left hand, the black marble deity resides not in a conventional temple, but in an intimate royal manor termed 'Haveli'. Worship here centers on selfless Vatsalya Bhava (parental affection) structured around 8 daily viewing windows (Jhakis).
History
Originally discovered on Govardhan Hill in Braj by Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya in the 15th century. In 1669 CE, to protect the sacred deity from Mughal iconoclasm under Aurangzeb, Goswami priests transported the idol towards Mewar. The chariot's wheels sank deep into the mud at village Sihad (now Nathdwara), signaling the Lord's divine wish to reside here under the protection of Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar.
Architecture
Designed as a Rajasthani fortified Haveli (mansion) with distinct courtyards like Moti Mahal, Kamal Chowk, and Govardhan Chowk. The layout is domestic and residential rather than soaring stone shikharas, preserving the intimacy of household seva.
Best time
October to March. Festivals like Annakoot (day after Diwali) and Janmashtami are celebrated with immense culinary and devotional splendor.
Timings
Each of the 8 Jhakis lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes spread across morning and evening. Exact timings vary daily with the season and ritual pace; verified schedule charts are displayed outside Kamal Chowk.
Darshan
During Rajbhog and Mangala, crowds can surge intensely. Separate queues are maintained for men and women inside the main viewing halls (Nij Mandir entrance). Modest traditional Indian attire is recommended.
How to reach
Maharana Pratap Airport Udaipur (DAB) is 60 km away. Udaipur City railway station (50 km) connects to all major Indian cities, with constant taxis and buses operating to Nathdwara.
